Impure Thoughts

Functional programming, down and dirty

Haskell, Asperger’s and Successful Cat-herding

It’s been a month, I really ought to write about a certain event in Cambridge. But mostly this is an excuse to post the slides from my talk from Anglohaskell 2007.

It’s definitely been an experience! Doing a talk like that brings a lot of things to a head - the part where you’re standing up on stage and saying “I can’t do this, I can’t do that, I’m bad at the other” is kinda scary, especially if you’ve not had a proper lunch. Next time I know I’ve got closer to an hour’s material, too. At the same time, that was the bit that was allowed to go wrong - the event itself went well and that was far more important.

So were there any lessons for me about organisation or getting things done? I think mostly it reiterated the same things I need to remember in day-to-day life - but then with an event that informal it’s okay to be seen harnessing chaos and playing just in time the right way. Get help, get regular feedback, work with the motivation as it comes and find ways to keep it stoked (see feedback again).

So with that out of the way and Summer of Code coming to an end, what do I do next? Well, it’s been a long and often lonely summer so I’m going to be concentrating on my personal life
